Puno is the gateway to Lake Titicaca. It is situated on the shore of the glittering lake in the high plains known as the “altiplano”. Besides the stunning scenery this area offers an insight into the ancient cultures of the area, the Aymara people and the Uros islands which are entirely made of reeds. A two hour’s boat ride from Puno takes you to the island of Taquile which is a Quechua community with its own traditions and fascinating way of life. The island is now a UNESCO site because of its textiles that are unique to the island. The women spin the wool while the men do all of the knitting.
