Machu Picchu expected to be open again in March with full train services being resumed in around 6 weeks.  Cusco remains largely unaffected;  aid continues to be sent to the Sacred Valley where many homes and crops were destroyed.

28th January 2010
Following unusually heavy rains and subsequent landslides the train that links Cusco with Machu Picchu has been suspended due to the damage incurred to the route.  People who were stranded at Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes, the nearest town were evacuated by helicopter.  Towns in the Sacred Valley have suffered extensive damage with many losing their homes and crops.

The rainy season is between December and the beginning of March when rain and the occasional landslide is always expected.  This year saw heavier than usual rains over a period of 4 days.
